In this lecture, we will delve into the fascinating world of feline behavior, exploring everything from cats’ quirky habits to their deep-rooted instincts. We’ll uncover the intricacies of how cats communicate not only with each other but also with humans and other animals. Tracing the journey of cats from their origins as wild animals to becoming cherished household pets, we will examine their evolving role in human societies. The essential aspects of feline health care, nutrition, and environmental needs, providing practical advice for optimal cat care will also be discussed. The lecture will also highlight impactful community initiatives that enhance cat welfare
Dr. Rachel Kristiansen, a Sheridan native, is a full-time tenured faculty member at Sheridan College in the Psychology department. She received her PhD in Experimental Psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2011. Publications of her research may be found in peer-reviewed journals such as Zoo Biology, the International Journal of Comparative Psychology, and the Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior and Cognition. In 2017, she completed a master’s degree in veterinary sciences with a focus on animal shelter medicine from the University of Florida, as well as a graduate certificate in nonprofit leadership. She currently serves as the Executive Director for Second Chance Sheridan Cat Rescue.
