The Bands and Jazz Studies Program at Sheridan College is a vibrant musical community comprised of SC music majors, SC majors in other academic studies, local high school students and community musicians. The collaboration of students and adult musicians of all ages, a number of whom are music educators and professional musicians, creates an exciting music-making atmosphere. Our program maintains a highly visible, active performance schedule with 6 major concerts each academic year, along with additional community outreach performances off campus.
Ensembles
The Sheridan College Concert Brass Ensemble is a select group comprised of 10-12 brass and percussion players performing classic and contemporary repertoire for brass and percussion.
The Jazztet is our chamber jazz ensemble that rehearses and performs music from the combo/”small band” tradition. This 4-8 player ensemble affords the numerous opportunities to learn important small group jazz repertoire and vocabulary as well as developing skill as improvisers. A number of Jazztet musicians have composed or arranged original works for the group.
The Jazz Ensemble is our large ensemble of 18-22 student and community musicians. We perform compositions and arrangements of classic Big Band repertoire as well as explore contemporary pieces for the modern jazz orchestra.
The Sheridan College Symphony Band, directed by Dr. Eric Richards, is comprised of 50-65 musicians drawn from both the SC student body as well as experienced local community musicians. This ensemble performs classic and contemporary wind band literature. The interaction of students and adult musicians of all ages, a number of whom are music educators and professional musicians, creates a vibrant and exciting music-making atmosphere in the SC Symphony Band.
The Trombone Choir is comprised of 5-10 trombonists performing Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and contemporary chamber repertoire.
*The Whitney Center Jazz Orchestra is the professional big band in-residence at the Whitney Center for the Arts.
