Dr. Robert Psurny Voice Recital
Saturday, February 1st at 7pm in Kinnison Hall at the Whitney Center for the Arts.
Free.
This collaborative performance will showcase the pairing of Dr. Psurny’s vocal talent with Pace’s masterful piano accompaniment. Together, they will present a curated program of vocal works by German and Czech composers from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The recital will begin with five songs by Felix Mendelssohn, exploring themes of love, loss, and the beauty of nature. Highlights include a Venetian Gondola Song and a vibrant musical depiction of a traveler racing on horseback to reunite with his beloved.
The program will continue with “Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen” (Songs of a Traveling Journeyman) by Gustav Mahler. Composed in 1884–85, this poignant song cycle reflects the poet’s unfulfilled love and emotional journey. Mahler later integrated themes from this work into his Symphony No. 1.
Selections from “Biblické Písně” (Biblical Songs) by Antonín Dvořák will follow. This cycle features verses from the Book of Psalms, including “The Lord is my shepherd” (Psalm 23) and “By the waters of Babylon” (Psalm 137), with the music beautifully intertwining spiritual reverence and emotional depth.
The recital will conclude with Five Songs by Joseph Marx, composed between 1906 and 1913. These works highlight Marx’s intricate harmonies and lush melodies, offering a fitting finale to an evening of exceptional music-making.
