Sheridan College’s Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Training Program (CMV) is tailored for local and regional employer needs. The program provides students the flexibility needed to fit this opportunity into their busy schedules. Students can earn Class A, Class B, or other necessary endorsements through online instruction, in-person instruction, simulator training, and driving practice.
Our CMV program prepares you to pass the appropriate state-required Commercial Driver’s License written and skills exams. We provide all necessary training and resources. Testing and licensing are managed by the Department of Motor Vehicles (Wyoming Driver’s License Manual for commercial vehicles).
Training for the following licenses and endorsements are available:
Required to operate any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, provided the towed vehicle is heavier than 10,000 pounds.
Allows operation of any commerical vehicle. (Tankers, Doubles/Triples and Passenger vehicles require additional endorsements.)
Must pass the following tests:
- General Knowledge
- Air Brakes (if equipped)
- Combination Vehicle
- Pre-Trip Inspection
- Basic Controls
- Driving/Skills
Required to operate any single vehicle that isn’t hitched to a trailer (commercial trucks that have an attached cab and cargo area with a combined weight greater than 26,000 pounds, as well as trucks with a detached towed cargo vehicle that weighs less than 10,000 pounds).
Allows operation of various non-combination vehicles. Examples include: straight trucks, box trucks, dump trucks and large buses (city buses, tourist buses, and school buses).
Must pass the following tests:

- Basic Controls
- Driving/Skills
Required to operate vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver.
Must pass the following tests:

- Passenger Endorsement
- Pre-Trip Inspection
- Basic Controls
- Driving/Skills
License class associated with endorsement will be determined by vehicle used for final examination. Example: Driver may already have a Class A license, but if testing occurs in a non-articulated bus, passenger endorsement will only be valid for Classes B and C.

Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Training Program Schedule
This program is available both for credit and non-credit.
Credit Program (Certificate of Completion)
The credit program leads to a Certificate of Completion from Sheridan College and includes 16 college credits. The credit option can be completed during a traditional 15-week college semester and is ideal for students also pursuing other degrees or certificates and/or those utilizing federal financial aid. Passenger and school bus endorsements require additional credits. Fall 2024 classes begin Aug. 26.
Non-Credit Program
The non-credit option includes various schedules from which to choose. Timing will vary based on which license and/or endorsements are desired. Registration is open now, for more information please contact:

Program Outcomes:
- Identify the role that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration serves for commercial vehicle operations.
- Define what constitutes a commercial motor vehicle in accordance with the FMCSA.
- Develop the skills and abilities for commercial vehicle and/or other designated equipment operation.
- Acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit.
- Acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License and/or additional license endorsement, vehicle, or equipment operation training certification.
Commercial Motor Vehicle graduates find employment in a variety of fields.
FAQ
The time to finish our Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Training Program will vary student-to-student. The credit option is completed during a 15-week regular college semester. Non-credit options may be completed within a 3-12 week window.
The cost will vary slightly, based on whether a student chooses credit or non-credit. Other variables include whether a student already has a Commercial Learner’s Permit and Entry Level Drivers Training. For more information, please contact:

There may be funding available. Students taking the program for credit may apply for scholarships and for federal financial aid. Other funding may be available for credit and non-credit program options through the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services at Sheridan Workforce Services Contact.
SC offers training in preparation for CDL Class A / Class B / Passenger Bus / School Bus
