Growing up on my family’s ranch in the Nebraska panhandle, I dreamed of becoming a trick rider, a journalist, or even a synchronized swimmer. I never imagined I would go to graduate school or become a college instructor. Inspired by my Grandma Hope, a lifelong English teacher, I received my Ph.D. from the University of Kansas and have been teaching English and Communication classes at the college level since 2002.

In the classroom, my goal is to foster in-depth thought and discussions about the literature and media we explore. I encourage students to make connections between what we study and the “real” world; how do these texts connect to our lived experiences? Why bother reading, studying, or writing literature? Does any of this stuff matter in our current lives?

Outside of the classroom, my hobbies include reading, biking, hiking our beautiful Bighorns, playing and baking with my daughter, and helping my husband sell coffee at farmers markets. I have yet to try trick riding, journalism, or synchronized swimming. Perhaps there’s still time.
